Is a Tally Course Enough to Get a Job? An Honest Answer

Whether a one-month Tally course is enough to be hired, what it realistically gets you, and what to add when it stops being enough.

Short answer: often yes for a first job, rarely for the second. That is worth unpacking. It is the difference between a course being a waste of money and being the best ₹10,000 you spend this year.

What a Tally course genuinely gets you

Tally Prime is what most Indian businesses actually keep their books in. Competence in it is expected in junior accounting roles rather than treated as a bonus, which cuts both ways. It rarely wins you a job on its own. But its absence loses you one, because “Tally knowledge” appears in most junior accounting adverts as a filter.

So a Tally course clears the filter. For accounts assistant and junior accountant roles at the small and medium businesses that make up most of the market, a Tally certificate plus a commerce background is frequently enough to get you interviewed and hired, which is a genuinely good return on two months and ₹10,000.

Where it stops being enough

The ceiling arrives sooner than people expect. Usually at the second job, or the first promotion. At that point employers stop asking whether you can operate the software and start asking whether you can do the work it records.

  • Can you file a GST return, not just enter the invoice?
  • Can you run payroll, handle PF and ESI, file those returns?
  • Can you close a set of books, not just maintain them?
  • Do you know a second package, if the employer runs BUSY or SAP?

Someone whose entire qualification is a two-month Tally course answers no to all four. They tend to stay at assistant level.

So should you do it?

Yes, provided you understand what it is: an entry point, not a destination. Two months and ₹10,000 to become employable is an unusually good ratio, and the course goes as far as inventory, payroll and taxation entries inside the software.

The mistake is treating the certificate as the finish line. The students for whom a Tally course works out over five years, rather than three months, are almost always the ones who used it to get hired and then kept studying in the evenings while the job paid for the next course.

What to add, and in what order

  1. GST Practitioner Course, two months, fee on enquiry. The natural next step. GST compliance is done inside the software you just learned, and it is the most commonly requested additional skill.
  2. Diploma in Financial Accounting, twelve months. The complete role, including payroll, PF and ESI returns, plus BUSY and SAP FICO.
  3. BAT Course, six months, if you are aiming at a corporate accounts department.

Studying while employed is normal here. Classes run in classroom and online mode for exactly that reason.

If you are not confident with computers

Start with the Basic Computer Course instead. Two months, ₹10,000. Learning Tally while also learning to use a computer makes both harder than they need to be, and the Excel component pays off across everything that follows.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a Tally course?

One month for the basic course, two months for advanced.

What is the fee?

₹10,000 for the two-month course. Call the institute for the advanced course fee, as the two are priced separately.

Can I learn Tally without a commerce background?

You can operate the software, but you will be at a disadvantage without understanding what the entries mean. If you are from a non-commerce background and serious about accounting work, the DFA course starts from fundamentals and explicitly accepts non-commerce students.

Is Tally still relevant?

Yes. It remains the default accounting package across Indian small and medium business, which is where most junior accounting jobs are.
